How do we work with English at O Castro British International School? Find out all the details about our Secondary English curriculum.
Proficiency in English has become essential for success in today's globalised world. In this context, secondary education plays a crucial role in preparing students to be fluent in English. However, the question arises: Is the English curriculum in secondary education really up to the demands of the 21st century?
How is English studied in Secondary Education?
The English curriculum in Spanish secondary education focuses mainly on the development of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. While this focus is essential, some experts argue that greater emphasis is needed on oral communication and the use of English in real-life contexts.
For this reason, and in order to complete this part which, perhaps, is a little lacking in the current secondary English curriculum, we have created language immersion as a way of achieving a higher level in this language without leaving the country. This is something we have been implementing at O Castro British International School since the school opened its doors.
Secondary English Syllabus: the O Castro British way of teaching
English is already very present in our students' academic life during Early Years. In fact, one of the main objectives of the three years that make up this stage is the learning of this language through songs and games. We are fully aware that, during this stage, the basis of the student's learning in their school years is formed and the cornerstone is laid for them to follow the English curriculum well when they reach Secondary.
Everything learnt in Early Years enables our children to arrive at Primary Education with a solid grounding in the basics of this second language. The whole of this stage is taught with a linguistic immersion in English and Spanish; that is, an environment is formed in which English is the main protagonist, so that they can interact and coexist with it as if it were a second language. This allows them to acquire even more competences in this language.
This work pays off in Secondary Education, a stage at which the children already have a fairly high level of English. The English syllabus in Secondary in Vigo follows the same dynamic as in the previous stages, which allows them to deepen their knowledge of the contents of the subjects of the prestigious British IGCSE and A-Levels.
Secondary English curriculum in Vigo
To sum up, learning English at school is not just about mastering grammar and vocabulary. It is a journey of discovery that opens doors to new cultures, opportunities and ways of thinking. A well-designed secondary English curriculum in Vigo (and beyond) can turn this journey into an exciting and rewarding adventure for students.
Knowing this, our school offers one of the best-prepared syllabuses in the country. For, as well as being fully aware of the importance of learning English from Early Years, we do so through a great linguistic immersion that promises students an active and continuous learning environment.
