World Robot Olympiad, an event for robotics and programming enthusiasts that O Castro British International School will host on 8 June.
Logonautas and O Castro British International School bring the World Robot Olympiad to Vigo. The event, which will bring together more than a hundred young fans of the world of robotics and programming, will be held on 8 June at the O Castro British International School in Mos, where 28 teams from Pontevedra, Ourense and northern Portugal will be able to participate, divided into different categories ranging from 6 to 15 years old. In this edition, it also has the support of the City Council of Mos, the Official College of Industrial Technical Engineers of Vigo (COITIVIGO), Optare Solutions and Generali Insurance.
The World Robot Olympiad (WRO) is an international educational robotics competition, which offers young people an opportunity to learn about technology and engineering in a fun and entertaining way. Under the guidance of a coach, participants must build an innovative robot to overcome a challenge. In this way, they learn and demonstrate their problem-solving skills while developing personal competencies.
"We are delighted to be hosting this year's WRO. An event like this not only supports our students' digital learning and journey, but strengthens our relationships with the wider community", expresses Chris Long, Principal of O Castro British International School. "The different robotics categories that form part of the competition will challenge young people in the area, and we hope it will showcase their talent and hard work. Preparation for the event is already underway to ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate and we look forward to welcoming families from southern Galicia and northern Portugal", he adds.
The main protagonists of the presentation of this event were Carmen and Olivia, two students from the school located in Mos, veterans in the WRO, as last year they qualified for the national final held in Catalonia. "Knowing about robotics is very important, as it gives you knowledge and resources that will be very useful in the future, and it is also great fun to meet people from other schools, other areas of Galicia, Spain and the world, if you get to the international final," they explained. Among the skills they work on with this activity, they highlighted teamwork, the ability to solve problems that are then applied in everyday life, while at the same time tackling global issues such as sustainable farms. "We are especially excited this year, as our school will be hosting the event," they said.
The competition
The competition encompasses a variety of challenges to be solved by teams in each of the categories, in this case RoboBasic, RoboMission-Elementary and RoboMission-Junior, in which they will compete in several qualifying rounds. In addition, this year the Future Innovators Junior category has been added, in which team members will have to present and defend their projects before the judges. The challenges of the WRO 2024 edition are inspired by the Earth Allies themes: green city, sustainable farm, animal rescue, sustainable future, the power of nature and the autonomous car.
Participation in the competition held at the WRO Vigo tournament will be a qualifier for the national phase, and from the national competition will come the qualifiers for the international phase. The national phase will be held in September in Huércal (Almería). Subsequently, the international final will take place in November in Izmir (Turkey).
