Last weekend, our Year 12 pupil, Mauro del Campo, made his debut in senior rugby playing in a friendly match in Pontevedra between Mareantes Rugby Club and Vigo Rugby Club. An outstanding milestone in Mauro's promising sporting career, as he did so at just 16 years of age, when in official competition you cannot participate in the Senior category until you are 18 years old.
Like his sister Lucía, an O Castro alumni who is currently studying Medicine at Lindenwood (USA) with a double academic and sporting scholarship, Mauro's sporting career is impressive, with seven Galician Leagues played, two Rugby 7's Cups and participation in two Spanish Championships with the Galician National Team, of which he has been a member uninterruptedly since he was 12 years old. The fact that the team staff have trusted such a young player to play a match with the senior team speaks of his outstanding preparation, but also of his maturity as a player and as a person.
In addition to the achievement of Mauro's senior debut at just 16 years of age, having shared the field with his PE teacher at O Castro British International School, makes this moment even more memorable for him.
Mauro started playing rugby twelve seasons ago when he was only five years old. At that time he watched the club's senior team play from the stands in the Division of Honour A, the top Spanish competition in this sport and in which his PE teacher played, becoming one of his references and dreaming one day of being there. Last weekend his dream started to come true, congratulations Mauro!
