IGCSE and A Level Geography Fieldwork: Exploring the Sand Dunes of Muxía

  • School education

Study of dunes, visit to Ézaro and Cabo Fisterra: practical learning, teamwork and connection with real geography.

Our recent A Level Geography field trip to Muxía provided students with an invaluable opportunity to apply classroom learning to real-world environments. Over several days, students camped near the coast, braving chilly mornings in tents—a challenge they met with impressive resilience and good spirits.

The main focus of the trip was a comprehensive survey of the region’s dynamic sand dune systems. Students tested infiltration rates, analysed grain size, measured vegetation cover, and recorded species distribution across different dune zones. These hands-on investigations deepened their understanding of coastal processes, ecosystem diversity, and the impact of both natural and human factors on fragile dune environments.

Fieldwork is a cornerstone of Geography, allowing students to develop essential skills in data collection, critical analysis, and teamwork. By working collaboratively in the field, students not only reinforced theoretical knowledge but also learned to adapt to changing conditions and solve practical challenges.

The trip also included a visit to the hydroelectric power station at Ézaro, where students explored the role of renewable energy in sustainable development. This experience broadened their perspective on the interconnectedness of physical and human geography.

A highlight of the trip was an evening excursion to Cabo Fisterra, where students watched the sun set over the Atlantic—an inspiring moment that underscored the beauty and significance of the landscapes they are studying.

We are proud of our students’ enthusiasm, adaptability, and commitment throughout the trip. Experiences like these are vital in preparing them for success in their exams and future studies, and in fostering a lifelong appreciation for the world around them.
