O Castro British International School pupils celebrate Globeducate Eco Week

This week O Castro British International School celebrated Globeducate's Eco Week, one of the global international experiences the group promotes, that allows us to work with students on environmental awareness and the importance of respecting and caring for our natural environment, through comprehensive activities integrated across the curriculum in different key stages.

In Early Years, and with the aim of raising awareness about our local biodiversity, Reception pupils set to work cleaning up the oceans. They talked about the waste dumped in the water and how rubbish pollutes our coasts, affecting sea creatures. After reflecting for a while, they helped to create a cleaner and safer environment for sea animals with great motivation and determination. This experience reflects one of the fundamental pillars of the British methodology in Early Years, learning through play, and that was precisely what our little ecologists did: learning, playing and taking care of the planet, all at the same time!

Year 5 Prepares to Explore the Cíes Islands!

As part of our exciting Eco Week celebrations, our Year 5 students had the fantastic opportunity to meet a local guide from the stunning Cíes Islands—a true treasure of Galicia and part of the Atlantic Islands National Park! During the talk, they learned about the incredible biodiversity, marine life, and ecological importance of the islands. From the crystal-clear waters and white-sand beaches to the protected bird species and rich ecosystems, the Cíes sparked curiosity and wonder in every child.

This session is just beginning! Year 5 will be visiting the islands in May, where they’ll get to experience everything they’ve learned first-hand! We can’t wait to see their learning come to life on this unforgettable eco-adventure.

Exploring the World’s Biomes with Year 6!

Year 6 students went on a global adventure—without ever leaving the classroom! As part of Eco Week, they’ve been diving into the fascinating world of biomes, discovering the unique climates, plants, and animals that make each one special.

From the icy tundras of the Arctic to the lush layers of the Amazon rainforest, our young explorers have been asking big questions about climate, conservation, and sustainability. Using hands-on activities and research projects they've learned how different environments support life—and what we can do to protect them.

Endangered Animals Scavenger Hunt!

Our primary students also became young conservationists on a special mission—taking part in a Galician Endangered Animals Scavenger Hunt!

Armed with a list of animals, a pencil and a big sense of adventure, the children explored the school grounds in search of hidden animals, each one featuring a species native to Galicia that is at risk of extinction—from the stunning golden eagle to the majestic Brown bear.

Along the way, they learned about: The habitats these animals need to survive, how human activity affects wildlife, what we can do to help protect them.

They were two days full of teamwork, discovery, and growing environmental awareness. The students were buzzing with excitement—and now they’re even more inspired to protect the amazing animals that call Galicia home.

It was a week full of enriching learning, which will undoubtedly help our students to care for and protect our natural environment even more!
