O Castro inaugurates its Creativity Lab: a new space for learning through creation

  • News

O Castro inaugurates its Creativity Lab, an innovative space with STEAM methodology, robotics and collaborative work where students learn by creating and develop 21st-century skills.

At O Castro British International School, we continue to advance our commitment to innovative education aligned with the challenges of the 21st century. We recently inaugurated our new Creativity Lab, a multidisciplinary space designed to transform the way our students learn, experiment and develop key skills for their future.

This new educational environment redefines traditional learning spaces and becomes a cross-curricular hub, integrating STEAM methodologies, advanced technology and collaborative work, always with the student at the centre of the process.

A space that ignites creativity and innovation

The inauguration of the Creativity Lab was also an opportunity to connect with our environment. The event brought together representatives from the educational, institutional and business spheres, reinforcing O Castro's role as the leading British school in Galicia and as a point of connection between pedagogical innovation and the local socio-economic fabric.

A learning environment designed for the 21st century

The Creativity Lab has been conceived as a flexible, dynamic and adaptable environment, capable of evolving according to the needs of each project. The modular furniture and open layout encourage collaborative work and connections between different areas of knowledge.

The space accompanies students throughout the creative process: from planning and design to creation, experimentation and presentation of projects. It has different areas such as a presentation area with audiovisual technology, a robotics station, a programming and testing space, and a 3D printing centre, where digital ideas are turned into real prototypes.

Students, the protagonists of learning

One of the most inspiring moments of the inauguration was seeing the Creativity Lab in action. Our students showed how this space comes to life through real projects: from video game programming and bridge building in Primary, to IGCSE students' art projects, A-Level students' EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) presentations, and data analysis from the campus weather station.

These activities reflect not only the versatility of the space but also the breadth and depth of the British curriculum, which is committed to practical and meaningful learning.

Learning by doing: from knowledge to skills

The Creativity Lab reinforces academic learning through the practical application of mathematics, science, technology, engineering and art. But its impact goes far beyond the curriculum.

Here, essential 21st-century skills are developed, structured around the 5 Cs: collaboration, communication, creativity, comprehension and critical thinking. Project management, teamwork, decision-making, and the ability to learn from mistakes are a natural part of everyday life, fostering resilience and a growth mindset.

As Chris Long, headmaster of O Castro British International School, points out, this space allows students to move from being consumers of technology to creators, with the freedom to experiment and learn in a safe and stimulating environment.

Another step forward in a comprehensive educational programme

The opening of the Creativity Lab is part of a continuous improvement plan of facilities that began two years ago. Other key environments have been added to this space, such as the Black Box, dedicated to public speaking and the performing arts, and the Green Zone, the base for The Journey outdoor learning programme, exclusive to Globeducate British International Schools and integrated into the curriculum from the age of three.

With the Creativity Lab, we are taking another step forward in our mission: to prepare our students not only to pass exams, but also to thrive in a global, technological and ever-changing world.
