We invite you to visit the first O Castro British International School Art Exhibition, an initiative within the O Castro Connects programme, which aims to showcase the skills, abilities and talents of its students beyond the school campus. The exhibition will remain open until 1 June at two well-known venues in the city centre, Cosmos and La Cuchillería, located in Plaza de la Princesa in Vigo's Casco Vello district.
The exhibition consists of more than twenty original artistic and literary by students from an extracurricular activity called ‘Art & Literature Magazine’, aimed at students aged 12 to 18, which was launched last school year. During this activity, students enhance and develop their artistic and creative skills, which are compiled in a magazine that can be found at the school and consists of two full-colour editions per school year.
‘Being part of the literary magazine allows me to work on my communication and teamwork skills,’ explains Mathias, a Year 11 student, the equivalent of Year 10 in the Spanish education system. Irene, also in Year 11, highlights the opportunity to meet friends, bring together people with similar interests and do something different.
The dynamics of the activity are very simple. Poems, short stories, photos and artwork are submitted to the magazine digitally and then considered for publication by the Editorial Board at weekly meetings. The editors are student volunteers who select the works that are ultimately published and collaborate on the format and distribution of the magazine.
Each year, the Editorial Board elects a student as Editor-in-Chief, so in addition to giving free rein to their creativity, students also work on key skills such as teamwork, problem solving and leadership, as well as skills related to the world of communication and the visual arts, such as graphic design, communication and desktop publishing.
The magazine
The magazine was created in autumn 2023 as an extracurricular vehicle for students to share their literary and artistic work. Many students find an outlet for their creativity in sports, dance, robotics and other extracurricular activities. ‘By offering this activity, we wanted to ensure that our poets, writers and artists also had a place to nurture their talents, as well as inspire other students to do the same and, hopefully, turn the magazine into a school institution that will endure for generations to come,’ explains school head Chris Long.
